Choosing a meal replacement can be a bit tricky. Why? Well, a lot of companies just re-package their protein powder shakes as meal replacement shakes – you get enough protein but not enough of everything else.

You need to find the right balance of protein, carbohydrates, fats and vitamins – because if you don’t, you could end up putting on weight, rather than losing it! Not getting the right amount of nutrients your body needs can end up giving you intense cravings. You could end up low on energy and craving all the rubbish foods that you shouldn’t have – excess processed sugar, white carbs, coffee, high processed fatty foods, etc.

If you take too much your body will do the obvious thing – gain weight. If on the other hand you don’t consume enough and don’t have any more nutrients to digest, your body will start consuming your water weight and muscle. Here’s a really important point to remember – your body actually burns less fat if you haven’t eaten enough, because your body goes into starvation mode. You’ll lose weight but keep the fat that you don’t want and lose the muscle you should be keeping. It’s an un-healthy state for your body to be in. Plus, having muscle keeps your metabolism at a healthy level and helps to burn fat. If you have it the other way round you have to eat less, to keep a much more un-healthy, flabby body. You are literally having to eat less to keep an un-healthy figure. Over the course of a year you could burn an additional 4.5kg – 9kg of fat just by having more lean muscle. To put that into perspective, by having a healthy body you can burn around an additional 30,000 – 65,000 calories per year! That’s over 200 cupcakes (if they’re around 300 calories each) per year. A moment on your lips … gone, burned up, not showing on your hips!

This is why it’s really important to get the right amounts of nutrients and its not just about consumption of calories – as a lot of people will tell you. Yes, you can lose weight by restricting your calorie intake, but you might end up with a (really) un-healthy body. Wouldn’t you want to end up with a body that allows you to eat more calories without putting on additional weight? If you follow an un-healthy weight loss regime it might mean a vicious cycle of losing weight, finding it hard to keep the weight off and then potentially having to go back to losing weight again in the future. It’s un-healthy and damaging.

Too much protein will keep your muscle mass but if you’re not processing the protein you’re not using, it turns to fat. Too much fat and you’ll put on fat (obviously). Too much carbohydrates can be un-healthy as well – as well as the increased weight gain. A lot of companies use refined carbohydrates and add refined sugar to make the product taste better. Refined foods are called empty calories – they do not make you feel satiated and the lack of nutrients means you’re left craving proper nutrition.

Have you ever taken a meal replacement shake and felt great afterwards? You feel full of life. Full of energy! That might actually have more to do with the added processed sugar and refined carbohydrates rather than any form of good nutrition.

Because of this, it can be harder for you to lose weight and A LOT easier for you to get beaten down and go back to an un-healthy diet.
